By now, everybody has heard about the controversy surrounding Colin Kaepernick, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback. Kaepernick has caused quite a stir due to his “sit down.” Put simply, he refused to stand for the national anthem. The Libertarian perspective is obvious. He is totally in the right. Although on a more subjective stance, he is also wrong to do so.
In my opinion, it shows a willful lack of character. When people make protests, it rarely does any good. Even though they can sometimes be full of well intentions, protests have really only done good in the sense that it makes politicians realize some people think a certain way about a subject. A more practical response to issues such as Black Lives Matter (BLM), and political issues would be to contact your representatives, which people do all the time.
People in the NRA stage letter campaigns and phone calling campaigns to representatives in the hope of incentivizing them to take a more proactive stance on “gun control” acts coming in through the legislative branch. Protesting is a lazy way to get stuff done, and rarely ever works unless if a politician or bureaucrat can benefit from your protest.
People are making responses to Kaepernick such as, “Oh my, how dare he do that!” or yelling out “He has a point, Black people are getting systematically gunned down every day!” You could take a more active stance and do Something to help out the cause. Protesting like this doesn’t help the cause. It has a far greater potential of alienating more people, rather than encouraging people to listen to your perspective.
Protests like what happened in Missouri on I-64 are prime examples of the wrong way to go about it. When protests are done primarily by BLM activists that serve as a publicity stunt, they take away from the good intentions that may or may not be at the core of the movement (which I personally think doesn’t exist).
This is almost the same basic idea behind why Kaepernick pulled this out his wazoo. It’s a stunt set up so he can get publicity and air time. Only he knows whether that is because he truly thinks black people get systematically gunned down by cops and whites, or he just wants to be in the limelight. It’s entirely subjective to think either way about the “issue.”
The whole lesson behind this is that instead of crying like a baby about problems, find a way to fix the problem, especially if you truly do think it is a problem in the first place.
