On Thursday, July 25, 2019, Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy financier accused of operating a sex-trafficking ring, was found injured in a Manhattan jail cell.
NBC New York reports he was discovered in a fetal position with lacerations to his neck. The local New York NBC affiliate has multiple differing reports from sources, reporting he either: attempted suicide, staged this incident in an attempt to get transferred, or was attacked by another inmate.
Epstein had previously attempted to be moved to home-detention in his Manhattan mansion and offered to put a substantial amount of his fortune up as bail. The judge denied him bail on July 18 and Epstein has remained in the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Manhattan ever since.
The judge’s decision against bail came after a bombshell report that a fake passport with Epstein’s picture and not his real name was found in his Manhattan home along with a stash of money and diamonds. The judge decided that Epstein poses risk of flight and danger to the community, thus, bail was denied.
Epstein has reported substandard conditions in MCC.l, including flooding, rodent infestation, and bad food.
Epstein’s jail-mate is a former police officer and possible violent criminal who is accused of killing four people and burying them in his backyard. However, the inmate and his attorney are denying any involvement and claiming he had a good relationship with Epstein.
Epstein is being watched closely by officials at the Manhattan Jail and has been put under suicide watch.
