In an extraordinary blog post on the platform Medium, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos alleges the tabloid magazine National Enquirer has attempted extortion and blackmail against him.
Bezos claims that he was threatened with the publication of nude photos of him, as well as suggestive photos of news reporter Lauren Sanchez, with whom he was having an affair. The motive? For Bezos to make a public statement to downplay the investigation of America Media Inc.’s (National Enquirer’s parent company) investigation into his personal life by saying the investigation was not “politically motivated or influenced by political forces.”
America Media Inc, or AMI, has been facing controversy recently over the practice of “catch and kill” regarding President Trump. The practice of “catch and kill” is to seek out a story with incriminating information just to shut it down and keep it from getting out through non-disclosure agreements and other legal techniques. For example, AMI paid $150,000 for an exclusive story on an alleged Trump affair prior to the 2016 campaign.
Bezos claims that he began to get on to AMI, opening an investigation into how they obtained his text messages. After this is when AMI reportedly approached Bezos.
