Ray Rice‘s wife Janay Rice spoke to Matt Lauer on the Today show about how life has been since her husband brutally knocked her out on camera and temporarily was kicked out of the NFL. Lauer asked her about what life was like after video of her husband’s brutal violence, and his recent reinstatement to the NFL.

“You can’t make excuses for anything, but we were highly intoxicated,” Janay Rice said. “In the moment, you’re not thinking about, oh, my god, I’m on camera in an elevator. So, of course people are going to read into everything and pick at everything about this situation. We understand that.”

When asked what she felt like after she found out she was left unconscious and saw the video. “I asked him, after I saw it, why did you just leave me there?” she said. “He said he was terrified. He was in such shock that this had just happened that he didn’t know how to function.”

Former U.S. Judge Barbara S. Jones rejected the NFL’s indefinite suspension of Rice, and the player is now looking for a new team to play on.
