Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed to retaliate against the U.S. on Wednesday after President Donald Trump imposed new sanctions on his country.
Rouhani said that the sanctions violate the spirit of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and promised that any new sanctions would receive “an appropriate response” from Iran.
“We would not overlook the US breaches and would stand against them, but at the same time, we are aware how to take advantage of the situation that has arisen,” Rouhani said while attending a cabinet session, according to Tasnim News, a government-affiliated outlet.
Trump’s new sanctions target 18 Iranian entities for their alleged support of Iran’s ballistic missile program. They were announced shortly after the administration certified Iran’s compliance with the provisions of the nuclear agreement. According to U.S. law, the White House must notify Congress of Iran’s compliance with the deal every 90 days. Trump’s administration has signed off on Iran’s compliance twice since taking office.
The JCPOA took effect in January 2016 after it was signed in July 2015. It allows Iran some relief on nuclear-related sanctions, however, sanctions related to the country’s ballistic missile program, human rights violations and support for terrorism are not included in the agreement.
