The Ferguson protester captured on camera throwing tear gas during the riots shot himself in front of two women Thursday night.
Edward Crawford, whose photo came to represent the Ferguson riots, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, reports the St. Louis Dispatch.
The death is being considered as a suicide, the medical examiner’s office said, though an official ruling will wait until the autopsy report comes in.

Police said Crawford, 27, was in the car with two women when he started telling them he was upset over “personal matters.”
“The victim began expressing he was distraught over personal matters to the witnesses,” the police department’s public information officer Leah Freeman told NBC News. “The witnesses heard the victim rummaging in the backseat, then heard a gunshot and observed the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.”
Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene shortly after midnight. Crawford’s father, Edward Crawford Sr., doesn’t believe it was a suicide.
“He was wonderful, great, always in a good mood,” Crawford Sr. said. “He just got a new apartment and was training for a new job.”
Crawford grew famous after a photographer captured him throwing tear gas that Ferguson police had deployed during the riots. The county’s counselor office charged him with interfering with the police and assault.
“I didn’t throw a burning can back at police. I threw it out of the way of children,” Crawford explained in August 2015.
