A lot of politicians rely on donors from the public in order to fund their campaigns. This is especially true leading up to an election. In addition, a lot of the public like to donate money to their favorite candidate or party in order to help them achieve the right result in the next election. Even if this is just a few dollars, it can help and you can feel like you are influencing your party.

However, there are a lot of scams out there that are trying to steal money from donors. Let’s learn more about it so that you can avoid them.

 Watch Out for a Scam PAC

A scam PAC or political action committee tricks you into thinking they are a legitimate group and that you can donate to your party. Unfortunately, they disguise themselves as really political action committees. But these groups are federally registered and actually use the money for candidates. On the other hand, scam PACs often take your money and disappear, not putting your hard-earned cash towards politics.

How to Spot a Scam PAC

Of course, nobody wants to be a victim of a scam. There are a few ways that you are able to spot a scam PAC and you have to be careful. For example, a lot of scam PACs will make unsolicited contact with you. For instance, they may try to call you on your mobile device or home telephone number. They can also send you emails trying to get you to donate to your favorite. You may not think a lot about this if you are a member of a political party or subscribed to their emails. But their approach is often aggressive and persistent, wanting you to donate a large sum of money now rather than later or introducing binary options scams. 

Some scam PACs will also offer you gifts or incentives to donate money. This can include gift cards or other rewards. You will give your personal details in order to receive this and you believe that you are just paying for postage. There are a lot of scams that claim they are helping you cast your vote by telephone. They are only doing this so that they can gain your personal details, such as your social security number. Always remember that there are no states that allow you to cast your vote by telephone.

If you do want to donate to a candidate’s campaign, make sure that you go on the internet to do so. Visit their official campaign website so that you can make a legitimate contribution. If someone contacts you out of the blue, be suspicious and do not donate via email or over the telephone. This is most likely a scam. If you are contacted, ensure that you do not give out any personal information that can be used to steal money from you or that leads to identity theft. Always be suspicious if someone contacts you like this.
