Homeschooling Levels Off For The First Time Since Turn Of The Century

The percentage of homeschooled students in America leveled off for the first time since the turn of the century, according to a study released Tuesday.

Homeschooled students grew by at least half a percentage point every four or five years from 1999 to 2012, according to a study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics. But while 3.4 percent of students were homeschooled in 2012, 2017’s figure fell to 3.3 percent.

Four-fifths of homeschooling parents said that drugs, peer pressure, and safety at other schools were incentives to teach their children at home. Parents also cited displeasure with teaching and a desire to teach religion as reasons for homeschooling, the Washington Post reported.

The National Center for Education Statistics polled parents on their satisfaction with elements of public and private schools. While 84 and 78 percent of parents were “very satisfied” with nonreligious and religious private schools, respectively, only 65 and 57 percent of parents indicated this feeling with regard to chosen and assigned public schools, each. Around three-quarters of parents across all four types of schools reported high satisfaction with the amount of homework assigned to their students.

Parental satisfaction with schools, teachers, academic standards, and discipline declined as students progressed through K-12 education.
