Hey, Baby Boomers – Thanks for that $18 Trillion Debt You’ve Left Us

First published on PennLive.com:

If I had a dollar for every time a Baby Boomer rolled their eyes and scoffed at a Millennial, I may have enough money to start paying off the ridiculous national debt they’ve incurred.

I was sitting in my local coffee shop one day and kept feeling the glares of people around me.

This was foreign to me, as it was maybe the second or third time I have been in that coffee shop.

But nonetheless, I kept seeing one man in particular shaking his head and glaring at me.

As I typed away on my laptop sprinkled with my “Don’t Tread On Me” and College Republicans stickers, I wondered in the back of my mind if maybe I was being mistaken for someone else… or maybe I had a big stain on my shirt.

I looked down at my Stand With Rand t shirt—no breakfast stains there.

As I looked up from my laptop, my evil-eyed comrade stood up and the pieces clicked as I noticed the Bernie Sanders pins gracing his vest.

All I could think was.. “Don’t glare at me, old man! It’s your fault our country is in this mess!”

How?

How will we ever pay off the $18 trillion in debt that we have acquired as a country?

Was the borrowing of the past worth it to ruin our economy so deeply?

As someone who deeply cares about my country and our future as Americans, I was eager to learn and get involved in politics.

But I had no idea that such an outrageous mess would be left on the lap of my generation and those to come.

So in turn, I salute you, old man in the coffee shop.

Although your generation has left my generation with outrageous debt and indescribably difficult political decisions to make, it has been your poor political decisions that have led me to realizing I am a conservative.

Your ideas of an over-inflated government wiggling its tentacles into every aspect of my life, the notion that racking up trillions of dollars in debt would somehow not destroy our nation, and idea of infringing on our constitutional rights for the sake of security has pushed me to the idea of liberty.

So thanks a lot, Baby Boomers.
