Website likes Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, and many others are not working Friday morning, allegedly because unknown hackers attacked the servers of Dyn, which is a major domain name system (DNS) host.
The attack is believed to be a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.
DNS is the technical network that converts website address names into numbers. It is essentially the “yellow pages” of web addresses. If DNS providers for websites like Spotify and Yelp are disabled or not functioning, than it is virtually impossible to gain access to those websites.
“This attack is mainly impacting US East and is impacting Managed DNS customers in this region. Our Engineers are continuing to work on mitigating this issue,” Dyn said early Friday morning in a published update on their own website.
This an ongoing matter. While some internet users are able to navigate their web browsers and go to these websites, others cannot, at least not yet.
