MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio – A recently released video from Middlefield police shows a man pulling an assault rifle out after being stopped for a traffic infraction back in March. The officers on the scene pulled over James Gilkerson for failing to stop at an intersection. The officers were immediately injured by Gilkerson who fired at them with an AK47 assault rifle carrying a 40-round magazine. The man shouted “kill me” at the officers while firing his weapon.
After granting the suspects request, police identified multiple loaded magazines, ammo cans, a ski mask and books on how to make explosives. In this case, it’s plainly obvious the officers stopped a dangerous madman. Although the man was obviously a dangerous psychopath, the police officers Erin Thomas and Brandon Savage acted heroically in putting down the suspect after they were injured. The officers did not harm any civilians defending themselves. Officer Savage reportedly fired only 29 rounds in response to the assault rifle wielding madman. That’s in great contrast to the behavior of the LAPD in the hunt for Christopher Dorner where the local police harmed civilians and put many lives in danger. This is an excellent case study for an appropriate response from authorities to a violent attacker.
Gun rights advocates understand that no display of violence is sufficient evidence to deny Americans natural rights to self-defense and to own weapons, but it’s cases like these that make it harder for pro-gun advocates to argue our case. The reality is that bad people will always do bad things and will be willing to break the law to achieve their goals. Laws only apply to people who will obey them. No tragedy is sufficient reason to deny Americans 2nd amendment rights.
