German Populists Propose ‘Negative Immigration’ Of 200,000 Per Year

Populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) released its election program Thursday, saying it wants the country to get rid of 200,000 more people than it takes in every year.

The party suggests “negative immigration” will be necessary for several years to make up for the large intake over the past two years. The election platform did not specify how the 200,000 target should be met.

AfD is further calling for an investigation into who should be held accountable for the “tolerated mass immigration starting in September 2015.”

The main focus of the platform is restrictions on Muslims, including a ban on headscarves in all public offices and schools.

“The AfD will not allow Germany to lose its cultural features due to a false understanding of tolerance,” the program reads.

AfD’s support has plunged in recent months after being the third most popular party with 15.5 percent’s support in December. The party is currently polling at between 8 and 11 percent.

“The falling poll numbers … doesn’t worry me in the least,” AfD co-leader Joerg Meuthen told Reuters. “Okay, they’re down now – that’s happened several times before and the key thing is how we’re doing at the time of the election, and I think we’re on top there – especially due to this program.”
