Georgetown Issues Trigger Warning Before Debate With Muslim Trump Voter

The cosponsor of a female Muslim Trump supporter’s speaking event has distanced itself, citing “controversial views.”

The Georgetown Review invited Asra Nomani, a Muslim Trump voter and former Georgetown professor, and Georgetown’s Dr. Christine Fair, to a debate at Georgetown University. The debate follows an expletive-laden quarrel between the two women on Facebook and Twitter. (RELATED: ‘F**K YOU. GO TO HELL’: Georgetown Prof Loses It On Muslim Voter)

While Nomani accepted the invitation, Fair declined. Jacques Berlinerblau, director of the Center for Jewish Civilization, will instead be speaking with Nomani, according to The Georgetown Review.

The Georgetown Bipartisan Coalition made clear that its co-hosting of Nomani’s talk in no way constituted an endorsement of what they called her “controversial views.”

“Our cosponsorship of this event is in no way an endorsement of Ms. Nomani’s opinions;” explained the Coalition. GBC claims it does not endorse any political views. “We understand Ms. Nomani’s opinions do not reflect the views of many students on campus. We are sensitive to any student who is offended by Ms. Nomani’s views, and we encourage everyone to attend and freely express their opinions, whether they agree or not.”

Nomani’s talk comes weeks after she filed a complaint against Fair through two separate avenues at the university.

“The conduct alleged here did not take place during your employment at Georgetown,” said Rosemary Kilkenny, Georgetown’s vice president for Institutional Diversity and Equity, referring to Nomani’s previous employment as a journalism professor at the school. “We do not process complaints from individuals outside the Georgetown community about behavior that occurred outside the Georgetown environment.”

The Muslim Trump supporter also filed a complaint alleging that Professor Fair had violated the Faculty Responsibilities code.

But Joel S. Hellman, dean of the Walsh School of Foreign Service, informed her that Fair’s anti-Trump remarks did not “substantially affect her teaching, research or University service, and so do not constitute faculty misconduct.”

An anti-Islamophobia group, The Bridge Initiative, is hosting an Islamophobia and anti-Semitism event during the same time as the Nomani-Berlinerblau talk. One member of the Steering Committee for The Bridge Initiative recently came under fire for saying “I don’t think it’s morally evil to own somebody.”

Seventy-two people will be attending The Bridge Initiative’s discussion, whereas 109 plan on going to Nomani’s event, according to the two Facebook pages.
