Food Fight! Washington D.C. Eats their own… Food Trucks?

You may take our lives. But you’ll never take… OUR  FOOD TRUCKS!

Imagine spending your life savings to open your dream business, only to have the government shut you down––just to protect industry insiders.  It’s happening right now in Washington D.C. The Institute for Justice is fighting for the rights of small business owners and their customers to serve food in trucks across the nation’s capital.

It’s an issue near and dear to this editors heart. I eat at them almost every day! The selections and variety are unbelievable compared to the bland burger joints and pizza palaces at Union Station right across the street.

Every week delicious Vietnamese Pho trucks bring hot soup with noodles and succulent meats that causes lines to back up for nearly half an hour. The Carnivore Truck brings BBQ brisket, pork and chicken piled in heaps and slathered in Memphis sauce. You can get it spicy with coleslaw on top. But nothing seems to compare to the cookie truck for all around satisfaction. Bring a few cookies back to your coworkers and you are the hero for the day. Otherwise, it’s Burger King or Taco Bell. That gets pretty old compared to the near infinite selection of gourmet food available at the DC food trucks.

From the Institute for Justice: D.C. is one of the best food-truck cities in the country. That’s something city officials should be proud of. But unfortunately, city leaders are considering new restrictions on food trucks that could be used to ban them from serving their customers in many parts of the city. If passed, these restrictions would make D.C. one of the worst cities for food trucks. In addition to reducing options for customers, these restrictions could force many food trucks to lay off employees, relocate to other cities with better laws, or go out of business altogether.
