Female Softball Coach Accused Of Sexually Abusing Girls

A former female softball coach was convicted during a court case after sexually abusing two girls, according to a Monday report.

A jury convicted Orange, Va., local Cathy Smith Rothgeb, 57, for sexually abusing two girls while working as a volunteer softball coach in town, The Associated Press reported. She sexually abused one girl from the age of 9-15 and another girl from age 15 to her first year of college.

Rothgeb faces 30 counts of sexual abuse to a child including forcible sodomy, object penetration, indecent liberties and cruelty to children. The disgraced softball coach, however, was found not guilty on four charges due to the second girl being over the age of 16 by the time charges were brought against the coach. Rothgeb’s son passed out while hearing the verdict, and she herself shouted profanity after hearing the verdict, CBS19 reported.

The incidents happened between 1990-1999. Rothgeb faced a similar charge in 2000, but the alleged victim did not want to testify. The case was then dropped. Prosecutors claimed the abuse happened several times a week and the coach threatened to use a gun if one of the victims spoke out. The defense accused the victims of lying.

Rothgeb will get her sentence May 21. The jury also recommended Rothgeb gets 184 years in prison.
