Eight people have been arrested in relation to Wednesday’s terror attack in London, which left three victims dead and dozens injured.
Hundreds of detectives took part in raids in London and Birmingham Wednesday morning. Eight individuals were arrested, but police believe the attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism.
“It is still our belief – which continues to be borne out by our investigation – that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism,” said Mark Rowley, Scotland Yard’s acting deputy commissioner, according to BBC. “To be explicit, at this stage we have no specific information about further threats to the public.”
Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed the suspect is a British citizen who’s been investigated by Britain’s domestic security agency MI5 for his ties to violent extremism. He was considered a “peripheral” figure on the current intelligence picture.
“We are not afraid and our resolve will never waiver in the face of terrorism,” May told the parliament. “He was not part of the current intelligence picture.”
May further said the attack was linked to “Islamic terrorism in some form.”
The attack took place Wednesday afternoon when a man plowed through pedestrians on the Westminster Bridge by the British parliament, leaving dozens injured. He then ran toward the parliament and stabbed an unarmed police officer who later died from his injuries. The attacker was shot dead by an armed officer moments later.
“He was every inch a hero and his actions will never be forgotten,” May said of the fallen police officer.
