Eco-Nut ‘Heartbroken’ Bernie Sanders Isn’t Vegan

Clinton Sanders

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., smiles as he is asked about running for president during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Sanders will announce his plans to seek the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday, presenting a liberal challenge to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Sanders, an independent who describes himself as a "democratic socialist," will follow a statement with a major campaign kickoff in his home state in several weeks. Two people familiar with his announcement spoke to The Associated Press under condition of anonymity to describe internal planning. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

An environmentalist and animal rights blogger is “heartbroken” that global warming crusader Sen. Bernie Sanders is not vegan.

“I love Bernie Sanders, and I’ve become personally invested in his presidential campaign. What totally destroys me, however, is that my beloved Bern-in-ator eats a ton of meat and shows no signs of going vegan,” Lauren-Elizabeth McGrath, an editor at the environmentalist and animal rights blog Ecorazzi, wrote in a Thursday blog post.

McGarth says even though Bernie has a perfect voting record according to the Humane Society Legislative Fund, the Vermont lawmaker is still “tak[ing] part in speciesism” by eating lots of meat.

McGrath is still a fan of Sanders and admits she’d “forgo every bit of journalistic integrity I ever dreamed of having and just lay it out there for you.”

The Vermont senator apparently eats quite a bit of meat and loves to grill, according to a January profile on his home life in People. Sanders even wrote the foreword to a 2010 book called “Good Meat: The Complete Guide to Sourcing and Cooking Sustainable Meat.”

Sanders has also been treated for gout, which can be caused by the over-consumption of meat, according to a report by his doctor published in late January.

Despite the fact that Sanders eats a lot of meat, vegans have organized to support him on social media.
