Drones Help Prevent Shark Attacks in Shallow Waters

By: Laura Meyers

A new use for drone technology is being utilized on a Los Angeles beach to help survey for sharks roaming in shallow waters.

This new tool makes its debut alongside the news of two teenage shark attack victims in North Carolina, with one victim saying “I didn’t see it coming. I was just in about waist-deep water, playing with my cousin … and felt this kind of hit on my left leg … like it was a big fish coming near you or something,” 16-year-old attack victim Hunter Treschl said.

“Then it just kind of hit my arm. That was the first I saw it, when it was biting up my left arm.”

Lifeguards at a Southland beach are utilizing their new drone to try to prevent attacks just like this.

“This morning, we launched it and 10 minutes later, we knew there were 10 to 12 sharks all in the Surfside [Beach] area,” Chief Joe Bailey, a Seal Beach lifeguard, said.

Within a matter of minutes, Bailey says he can track the sharks in real-time, measure their size, and monitor their behavior- all without a single lifeguard going into the water.

“It works great,” he said. “It flies up about 100 feet, looks down a wide area, and when we see the shadows, we’ll go down and focus in on them.”

“If we get bigger sharks or we get sharks that are aggressive, we’re actually going to close the water. But right now, we have sharks that are 5- to 6-feet long, non-aggressive, acting like normal sharks, feeding on bottom fish, doing exactly what we would expect them to do,” Bailey said. “That’s why we have it posted just to let people know that they are there.”

Technology such as this could, and should be utilized to help prevent more dangerous shark attacks in wading waters.

I don’t like the idea of a government drone spying on Americans’ backyards as an unconstitutional excuse to gather probable cause for a warrant, but I do like the idea of beaches investing in drone technology that could save innocent swimmers from being the prey of hungry sharks in shallow waters.
