I don’t like Donald Trump. As a libertarian-leaning Republican, I don’t think he has what it takes to lead the country and beat either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. Donald Trump brings out the worst in the Republican Party; bigger government, the defeat of the Constitution, more spending, and xenophobia. He, in other words, is a fascist, a man who demonizes certain ethnic groups in order to gain power. He’s our Hitler and we must own up to the fact.
First, there’s his planned deportation of around eleven to twelve million people. Never mind the impossibility of finding where eleven to twelve million illegal immigrants are, or the immense cost this require. Regardless of the unconstitutionality of breaking into people’s homes, denying them trials, and sending them back across the border into Mexico (never mind the fact that at least a quarter of them come back by plane). He’s ready to deport hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of U.S citizens (anchor babies, most of whom have never even seen Mexico and don’t speak their parent’s native language).
We call ourselves proponents of limited government. And yet we are going to massively expand the government? Massively expand the national debt by 75% more over the next ten years? Donald Trump’s plan will lose over 9 trillion dollars in revenue over the next ten years. Yet he calls for spending increases.
Then there is his troubling remarks about Mosques.
I understand that many people are frightened by Islam and by Muslims in general. But Trump’s implying we may have to spy on or shut down mosques would violate the 1st and 4th Amendments. There are even reports he is open to the idea of creating a database for Muslims. The Constitution shouldn’t be shredded because we are at war or because we are frightened. Remember the Japanese-Americans in World War II who were imprisoned without charge or trial.
The Constitution is there for all American citizens, regardless of their religion, race, or creed. Justice Harlan wrote in his dissent of Plessy v. Ferguson that,”In view of the Constitution, in the eyes of the law, there is in this country no superior, dominant, ruling class of citizens. There is no caste here. Our constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens. In respect of civil rights, all citizens are equal before the law. The humblest is the peer of the most powerful. The law regards man as man, and takes no account of his surroundings or of his color when his civil rights as guaranteed by the supreme law of the land are involved….”
There are a lot of things to call Donald Trump. Many admire him for his politically incorrect language, his bombastic personality, and his plan for deporting over eleven million illegal immigrants who many believe are hurting our economy. They are frustrated with the current status of things and they believe that Trump is the best to overthrow the status quo in Washington. They don’t consider that you need Congress to work with you in order to make changes and that we would likely see even more gridlock. Many of his supporters on Facebook usually just shout “TRUMP 2016” or insults. A few days ago, I was called an anchor baby, a person afraid of deportation, and told that people like me pander for handouts. All because of my last name.
I was born here, my parents are here legally, and that I am a U.S citizen, but to say someone is afraid of deportation because of my last name? Now I know that Trump doesn’t represent his supporters, but when I see the same thing over and over, it gets disheartening.
That’s why we must oppose Donald Trump. He’s going to send this party over the edge. His candidacy represents the shredding of our Constitution and the shredding our American values. It’s trading liberty for security.
Trump is an authoritarian nightmare and we must wake up before we are sucked into the dark abyss of fascism.
