Venezuela’s government says that right-wing terrorist groups backed by the U.S. are fighting the government as part of a coup attempt.

Opposition members say that the protestors are students and other ordinary Venezuelans who are tired of the corruption and censorship perpetrated by President Nicolás Maduro and the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela.

Yesterday, a Venezuelan National Guard captain was shot in the head, bringing the conflict’s death toll to 29. Air Canada, Canada’s largest airline, has now suspended flights to the country, citing concerns about “civil unrest.”

Though the Venezuelan government blames the U.S. for the protests, Maduro recently asked the U.S. to send an emissary to Venezuela to help resolve the violence.
