Critics Accuse Taylor Swift of Being ‘Cheap’ after a recent $50K Donation to NYC Schools

Taylor Swift is, once again, under harsh scrutiny. However, this this time it’s because she made a generous donation of $50,000 to New York City’s public school system. Critics are saying that Taylor Swift is being too ‘cheap’ and expect her to have been more generous.

Swift initially announced her pledge of donating proceeds of the sales from her hit single ‘Welcome To New York”, while promoting her album 1989 on “The View” back in October. Since then, the album has sold 4 million copies.

“It’s selling really well, which is good, because I’m donating all of my proceeds to New York City public schools,” said Swift, on the show.

Industry sources estimate that the tune has generated about $125,000 for Swift, after fees and expenses were paid out.

The city’s Department of Education prematurely announced that the $50,000 donation would be a one-shot deal on Tuesday, but before they could clarify, the onslaught by social media warriors had already begun.

People were quick to pile on the platinum-selling artist, via social media, questioning the 25-year-old superstar’s generosity, according to the New York Daily News

“Taylor Swift giving 50,000 dollars to NYC schools is like me throwing a quarter at a homeless guy,” Twitter user @KatiePisarcik vented Tuesday.

“Damn, she’s cheap,” @Delgado13, another tweeted.

There have been some that would defend Swift’s intentions, like Raven Holmes, 16, of Brooklyn who said people should back off.

Many also pointed out that a lot of celebrities boast about representing New York, yet are nowhere near as charitable with their money as Swift has been.

“…they don’t do anything for us,” said Holmes, a sophomore at Essex Street Academy on the Lower East Side. “She’s not even from New York and she’s giving back.” the student said of the pop star.

Critics would probably do well to mind take heed of an old proverb, which says to never look a gift horse in the mouth, because they are certainly sticking their foot in it this morning. Later, the department come out to say that Swift would continue to donate proceeds to the city’s public schools. How much more, is unknown at this time.

Swift moved to the city in 2014, purchasing a $20 million penthouse apartment in Tribeca, previously owned by the Lord of The Rings director, Peter Jackson.

The newly named, New York City’s Global Welcome Ambassador, is also paying high New York city property taxes, estimating to cost Swift $5,895 per month, according to public records.

Needless to say, this is the ‘unseen’ donation to the New York City public school system – albeit, an involuntary one- that critics all too often fail to recognize.
