Irvington Police Capt. Monique Smith allegedly chased down Newark City Councilman John Sharpe James on Monday, repeatedly ramming his car after a verbal dispute, WABC New York reports.

Police say Smith, who had been promoted to police captain earlier that day, was yelling at James around 11 p.m. When he got in his car to leave, she followed him and began ramming his car.

Smith left before police arrived, and she has been charged with aggravated assault, stalking and harassment, NJ.com reports. The incident is under investigation.

James reached out to constituents on his Facebook page:

“Thanks everyone for their support,” he said. “I ask that you please do not tag me in any posts or articles related to the situation. This was not the way I intended to begin 2015.”

Despite being allegedly assaulted, James seemed positive.

“Let us work together as a community to move Newark forward,” he said. “God Bless America and the City of Newark.”
