A Florida sheriff’s office announced one of their officers has been fired and charged with battery after a video showed the officer allegedly punching a female detainee.
Jacksonville Undersheriff Pat Ivey said officer Akinyemi Borisade inappropriately hit a strip club employee who had been arrested Wednesday, WJXT reports. A video of the incident released by the sheriff’s offices allegedly shows Borisade throw Mayra Martinez, the employee, against a wall. When she responds by kicking him, the officer punches her multiple times.
Other officers can be seen standing there watching the fight unfold.
“He could have turned her around and held her in a transporting position that they are trained in back over to the location to wait by the door,” Ivey told WJXT. “He could have stood there with her, but there was no need to strike her.”
A different video obtained by the Florida Times-Union shows an officer hitting Martinez when she was being arrested in the parking lot. The police report says she was drunk and resisting arrest, even biting officers. Martinez had just quit her first day on the job working for the strip joint before the arrest occurred. Martinez was charged with resisting officers and trespassing. The sheriff’s offices said the officers who watched the fight will not receive any discipline.
“Witnessing a crime does not constitute a crime,” Christian Hancock, sheriff’s office spokesman, told The Times-Union. “They would have been questioned about the incident as any other witness to a crime would be. The reporting of this incident was almost instantaneous.”
