Cop Caught Watching Four Hours Of Child Porn Per Shift Kills Himself

A Broward County Sheriff’s sergeant, who was charged with 29 counts of child pornography, killed himself Wednesday night about 8 hours after being released from jail on a $250,000 bail.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Sergeant Kreg Costa, age 43 and from Sunrise, Fla., was released from jail under the condition that he not spend any alone time with his children. Dan Aranson, the law partner of Costa’s lawyer, gave Costa a ride home. Costa called the local police at 5:30 pm Wednesday. When the police arrived on the scene, Costa was outside his house bleeding from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Police said that no one else had been home and there were no witnesses. Costa was taken to Broward Medical Health Center and police confirmed his death at 11:27 pm that night.

Veda Coleman-Write, a spokeswoman for the sheriff, told the Sun Sentinel, “His wife and children need our prayers and support.”

Costa was arrested on June 8 and later charged with 29 charges of child pornography. The charges come from his illicit interactions with a 15-year-old girl in California. Knowing that she was 15, Costa frequently asked her to send him pornographic videos and pictures of herself.

Costa’s odd behavior raised a red flag with his colleagues, according to a statement from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Many of them “noticed Costa staying in his office during his night shift with the lights off and his uniform belt and gun belt removed.”

The statement said, “As a result of this bizarre behavior, PCU detectives requested a computer usage report of Costa’s work-issued laptop from January 1 to March 31. The report showed Costa was viewing hardcore pornography, incest-related and bondage/dominance websites while he was at work.”

The investigation revealed that Costa, who worked for 17 years at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, would look at child pornography for approximately 4 hours on his shifts, according to WPBF.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Sheriff Scott Israel said, “These charges are deeply disturbing. These allegations, if true, are reprehensible. We’re not going to stand for this type of behavior. It was illegal, it was immoral, and it tarnished the badge.”

While under investigation, Costa was suspended without pay. According to the Sun Sentinel, he made $146,000 in salary last year, including more than $10,000 in overtime.
