Another college plans to create more safe spaces for their black students after a task force found that many of the black students feel “dissatisfied, exhausted and alienated on campus.”
Northwestern University released a 149 page report that a task force conducted on the “Black Student Experience,” reports The College Fix.
The reports lists 14 recommendations that would make black students feel more satisfied and comfortable while at the university.
One suggestion includes making three more spaces specifically for black students so they can socialize and connect with each other.
“One finding in the data is the sense of diverse Black identities and experiences that cannot all be encompassed in the Black House alone,” the report suggests. “So it seems like a good moment to call for the creation of new spaces for Black connection and community building, but ones which are open to student definition and creation.”
The report also recommends that the campus increase the number of black students, faculty and staff. One way they plan to recruit black students is by offering a more competitive financial aid package to incoming black students.
They also propose that the university conducts a “cultural audit” on various buildings and spaces to make sure they are “representative of the diversity that exists within the University community.”
Wildcat Welcome, the college’s week long orientation for new students, should also be examined to figure out how it can be more “inclusive”and “welcoming” for the black students.
The report, based on already existing data, focus groups and the 2016 Black Student Experience Survey, sought to address any dissatisfaction black students may feel with their experience at Northwestern.
The six focus groups that met had a low participation rate, with only 12 percent of those invited participating in the focus groups.
