New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman tweeted Tuesday morning a letter sent his former college professor sent him in which the professor apologizes for doubting Edelman and telling him to set “realistic goals.”

The professor made the comment in 2006 during Edelman’s sophomore year at Kent State University after he talked about “going to the league” in class. Eleven years later, the professor sent her apologies for “stupidly [voicing] an uneducated opinion”.

Within the letter, Edelman’s professor brought up the most common remark for aspiring athletes: “few people successfully enter the ranks of professional athlete.”

Based on what Edelman captioned the tweet with, he used his professor’s comments as “#Motivation” and advises others to “Set your goals high.”

What the professor later confessed, though, is what all people should consider before making that statement.

“I think it [was said] early in the semester, before I knew you, but how could I ever have doubted your tenacity and grit is beyond me,” the professor said.

Edelman played his first snap at quarterback in the very same semester that this comment was made. After three seasons, he would go on to be drafted in the 7th round by the Patriots in 2008. Since then, Edelman has appeared in three Super Bowls, two of which resulted in a championship.
