College Creates ‘Afro Themed’ Dorm Rooms After Black Student Freaks Over White Student’s Dreadlocks

San Francisco State University is planning to create “Afro themed” dorm rooms after its Black Student Union demanded a safe space for black students.

University officials say the dorm rooms are in the early stages of planning, reports CBS Local. The new dorm room would focus on race and culture.

Though specifically geared for black students, the university says anyone can live there. Black students only make up about six percent of the university’s population.

“We want to be pro-active responding to some of the issues that have been brought out by the Black Lives Matter movement and we want to work with our student leaders in the Black Student Union and other students of color organizations to make sure that our living and learning community here is inclusive,” spokesman Jonathan Morales said.

Last year, a black female student berated a white student for having dreadlocks. The girl accused the student of cultural appropriation and grabbed his arm during the interaction.

The dorms come after the Black Student Union claimed that black students need a safe space from the rest of campus where they can gather and talk about black issues.

Some students feel that the dorm room are necessary and are a good opportunity to learn about the culture.

“I definitely think it’s a good thing if people want to learn more about the culture and especially with the Black Lives Matter movement, if that’s incorporated into it. I think that’s a good thing,” student Brittany Trimble said.

One student argued that the college should have “united dorms” where students from different cultures come together.

California University Los Angeles recently created “black only” student housing as well. The Halsi Scholars Black Living-Learning Community came after their Black Student Union issued a list of demands to the university.

One demand asked for a living space for “blacks only” with a Residential Director to “cater to the needs” of the black students. (RELATED: Taxpayer-Funded California University Offers Segregated Black-Only Housing)
