LISTEN TO TLR’S LATEST PODCAST:
By Rob Shimshock
The Christian student who was suspended from college after disagreeing with his Muslim professor has been reinstated following an investigation by the school.
Marshall Polston was suspended from Rollins College after allegedly challenging his Muslim professor, Areej Zufari, on her assertion that Jesus wasn’t crucified and his disciples didn’t think he was God.
Following an investigation by the school, he was reinstated as a student, as reported by Central Florida Post.
While Zufari submitted a police report regarding Polston and insisted the student had shown up outside of class after he was suspended and told to keep away from the professor, Polston produced a restaurant receipt and surveillance photo disproving the allegation. Rollins found Polston “not responsible” for charges pertaining to his behavior, according to a letter sent from the college to the student Thursday and published by Central Florida Post. Polston was also found “not responsible” for abuse of a mental, physical, or verbal nature.
“Community Standards and Responsibility has found that you have not crossed the threshold of violating our Code of Community Standards,” Maeghan Rempala, Rollins’s director of community standards and responsibility, said in the letter. “However, your behavior has not always been consistent with the values we abide by at the College.”
“The evidence presented did show you have been aggressive, disrespectful, and at times, vulgar in multiple verbal and electronic communications with faculty, staff and students.”
After quoting passages from the Rollins Honor Code, Rempala told Polston to “please use this occasion to reflect on how best to express your opinions and treat others in a respectful manner.”
Polston’s attorney, Kenneth Lewis, thanked Rempala for her investigation, but noted the toll the incident has taken on his client.
“This decision does not undo the damage sustained to Mr. Polston by these unfounded allegations,” said Lewis, in a press release published by Central Florida Post. “He has lived in exile for the past week and will be judged unfairly [because of] Zufari’s malicious assassination of Mr. Polston’s character.”
“What is particularly disturbing is that Zufari would attempt to destroy the academic career of Mr. Polston for merely questioning her academic validity,” Lewis continued, asserting that the professor deserves to be investigated more than the student. “We are calling on Rollins College to make a full inquiry as to Zufari’s fitness to continue on at Rollins in any capacity.”
“My Mom has been so supportive of me,” said Polston. “In return, many on social media have targeted her.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to both Polston and Zufari for comment, but did not hear back from Zufari and was unable to schedule a time to talk with the student.
