In China, you are only allowed to have one child. Liu Xinwen was six months pregnant when Chinese officials broke into her home, ripped her out of bed, drove her to the hospital and demanded doctors abort her fetus with an injection. She already had one son, and the state would not allow her another.

Xinwen spoke of her lost son, “I miss him. “I didn’t get to see him. I would be even more upset if I had seen him. Baby, I’m sorry. We were not meant to be. You rest in peace in heaven. We will pray for you. We hope your next life is better.”

Parents are usually just supposed to receive a fine if they break the one-child rule. But some areas of China go to extremes, like those in the Shandong Province Family Planning Commission. When the police came to take Xinwen, they pinned her husband down so he couldn’t defend his wife. They never said where they were taking her, and he spent five hours looking. He said when he finally saw her later that “My wife was lying in bed. I asked her: ‘Have you been injected?’ She said ‘yes.’ I asked if the baby was still moving. She said ‘not much.’ After that, I didn’t want my wife to see my crying. I went outside.” The couple had tried to conceal the pregnancy, hoping to deliver the child alive and pay the fine, rather than force an abortion.
