Is Capitalism saving the environment? (VIDEO)

“The best thing to happen to the environment was the fall of the Berlin Wall.”

STRASBOURG, FRANCE – Member of European Parliament from the United Kingdom Daniel Hannan spoke on the subject of environmentalism and capitalism during a plenary session of the EU.

Hannan excoriated environmental bureaucrats who frequently complain that the environment is getting worse. Hannan contradicted this, and points to the fact that the environment has improved in recent years, due to capitalism.

But is Hannan correct?

Ask Al Gore who said,

“Free market capitalist economics is arguably the most powerful tool ever used by civilization. As the world’s leading exemplar of free market economics, the US has a special obligation to discover effective ways of using the power of market forces to help save the environment.”

Tom is obviously not listening and he definitely has his mind made up against corporations. We have property rights but we do not have the right to – in his words – “to not have all kinds of externalities put in my body.” This is quite an elaborate ruse to get off subject and make it sound as if corporations can’t be controlled (in other words they are the problem). I could take him on in a debate with no problems whatsoever.
