One Confirmed Dead in Shooting Near Texas Southern University

One person has been fatally shot and another injured near Texas Southern University this afternoon, prompting the school to go into lockdown amid concern for its students.

Authorities say the victim was leaving an event at the campus museum before getting into an altercation with another person, who then drew a gun.

Houston police believe they have the suspect in custody, though no other information is available at this time.

The shooting, which occurred at a student housing complex close to the school, has shaken the TSU community for a third time this week. Police are investigating possible links between today’s incident and one that occurred Thursday around midnight. On Tuesday, a man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being shot in the abdomen on a walkway that leads through TSU campus grounds.

The incident also comes hot on the heels of a shooting at Northern Arizona University early Friday morning, which left one dead and three injured, while nine were killed last week after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua College in Oregon.
