Should blind people be allowed to carry concealed handguns? (VIDEO)

The 2nd Amendment doesn’t say you have a right to bear arms… unless you’re blind!

The anti-gun warriors have a new target in their sights… the disabled.

The state of Iowa has been issuing gun permits to the blind. This is due to the fact that every single American citizen has a constitutional and civil right to bear arms, regardless of their physical ability. Owning a gun is not considered a privilege under the law, as driving is.

But certain special interest groups disagree.

Activists have begun to squawk that the disabled should not share the rights of their more able-bodied fellow citizens. Some people would like to deny the blind from enjoying the right to carry a concealed weapon to defend themselves if they are ever in danger.

God save this nation from concerned parents

article_photoGena Reeder of the Richmond, Virginia chapter for Moms Demand Action stated: “If you are physically not competent to fire that weapon then you’re posing a threat to public safety,” Reeder says. “It’s one thing to have a firearm for your personal safety at home but when you get your concealed carry permit you are presumed to be carrying a loaded weapon out in public.”

But blind people using firearms isn’t new. There are plenty of blind hunters who safely carry and use firearms to hunt with and there has been no epidemic of shooting accidents due to it. Cedar County Iowa Sheriff Warren Wethington, whose daughter is blind stated, “If sheriffs spent more time trying to keep guns out of criminals’ hands and not people with disabilities, their time would be more productive.”

Still some others are claiming that denying firearms permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA is a federal law that generally prohibits different treatment based on disabilities.

READ OP-ED: Does anyone think we Americans are stupid enough to let anyone take our guns?

A blind person that might be under attack could push the gun towards the person, maybe even possibly touch them and then pull the trigger,” says Philip Van Cleave of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, “That would be a more effective weapon then them trying to fight with a knife.”

Some states do have laws that can prohibit the blind from carrying self-defense items. Missouri and Minnesota have laws that require applicants to conduct a live fire test, shooting and hitting a target. Nebraska applicants must provide a “proof of vision” or a statement by a doctor that they would meet the normal vision requirements for a driver’s license. South Carolina has a similar law according to USACarry.com, visit their website to find the laws in your state.

So, should blind citizens enjoy equal protections under the Bill of Rights? Or do you value safety above liberty?

If you choose the latter then I might say: If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms (not that you have any). Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
