*VIDEO* Baby’s life saved with 3D printed device

Will our lives, our families and our future depend on 3D printed technology?

Ann Arbor, Michigan – Bryan and April Gionfriddo were devastated when their baby stopped breathing one night due to a Tracheomalacia infection. They prayed that his collapsed bronchus would be opened and that there would be hope for a cure. Scientists at the University of Michigan’s children hospital responded by producing a device using 3D printing methods that did the job beautifully, creating a splint that opened up baby Kaiba‘s airways. The device will be absorbed into the body after a period of three years, just enough time to give the lungs of the child time to develop.
