Archaeologists in Mexico City have made a startling discovery at an excavation site near an ancient Aztec temple — the team has unearthed an ancient palisade of human skulls numbering in the hundreds.

They fear hundreds more lie below, awaiting discovery after centuries of concealment.

Reuters reports that a company of archaeologists, scientists, and historians located the cylindrical edifice at the site of Templo Mayor, the great pyramid temples of Tenochtitlan, once the capital of Aztec civilization.

Prior to their incorporation into the temple, the team believes many of the skulls were featured on the Huey Tzompantli, a gargantuan scaffold of skulls the Aztecs positioned in the path of the advancing conquistador army under Hernan Cortes in the 16th century, as part of a psychological strategy which used foreboding, macabre imagery to deter attacks.

Many such structures were erected with the skulls of deceased warriors, but biologists on site say many of the newly-discovered skulls belonged to women and children.

“We were expecting just men, obviously young men, as warriors would be, and the thing about the women and children is that you’d think they wouldn’t be going to war,” Rodrigo Bolanos, a biological anthropologist, told Reuters. “Something is happening that we have no record of, and this is really new, a first in the Huey Tzompantli.”

Nearly 700 skulls have been recovered thus far.

The tower is six meters, or nearly 20 feet, in diameter, and is positioned near the chapel of Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of the sun. Ritual worship of the deity often involved human sacrifice.

A Catholic church was erected over the site of the Templo Mayor shortly after the Aztec conquest. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is the oldest, largest cathedral in Latin America. The church is the seat of Norberto Cardinal Rivera Carrera, the archbishop of Mexico City.
