Amazon CEO Wants To Move Heavy Industry To Space To Save The Planet

Craig Boudreau

Jeff Bezos says within the next few hundred years industry should be moved to space to spare Earth from total depletion of natural resources. “Energy is limited here. In at least a few hundred years … all of our heavy industry will be moved off-planet,” Bezos remarked at the CODE Conference Tuesday.

Since Earth naturally shades itself with things like trees and clouds, Bezos says it just makes sense that solar panels would be better suited as a viable energy source in space, where no cover can interrupt the Sun’s energy. “We don’t have to actually build them here,” he said. “The Earth shades itself, [whereas] in space you can get solar power 24/7,” Bezos added.

What he fails to mention, however, is the cost of building these factories in space. The solar industry already requires massive government subsidies — to the tune of $39 billion annually.

If Bezos and others can prove the viability of solar in space, as well as figure out how to effectively store the energy, this could be huge news.
