A new report out of the Associated Press (AP) states that not just one, but both of the Republican Senators from Alaska have resigned their leadership posts after denouncing their party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump.
According to the report, Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Sen. Dan Sullivan have both voluntarily resigned their posts as honorary members of of the party’s state central committee, as confirmed by a Murkowski Campaign spokesperson.
AP reports that the Senators resigned due to the fact that Party officers are expected to back the national party’s candidate.
Trump appears to be hemorrhaging party member endorsements, after the release of a 2005 audio recording just before the second Presidential debate last Sunday. While it is not clear how this will play out for him come November, it would be hard to believe a candidate could win the presidency with a large chunk of his party fighting him at every turn. This is especially given that any time Trump is criticized, he seems to always return fire in his signature ad hominem tirades on Twitter.
It should also be mentioned that, similarly to Murkowski and Sullivan’s resignation, there was a prior group of party officers who resigned due to their wish to publicly back former Republican and now Libertarian candidate for Senator of Alaska, Joe Miller, who is challenging Murkowski in the upcoming general election.
