Happy Memorial Day Sunday, Liberty Lovers!
On September 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key observed the British bombarding Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The morning after the attack, he noticed a lone U.S. flag flying over Fort McHenry.
These events inspired Key to write a poem called “The Defence of Fort McHenry” in 1814, which was later set to music. In 1931, the song became America’s national anthem!

The Star-Spangled Banner
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Today and every day, we remember and honor our fallen military heroes.
