Doctors finally diagnosed a 2,000-year-old Egyptian mummy with cancer after examining the body for 11 years.

Doctors at the Crouse Hospital in Syracuse diagnosed the mummy named Hen with cancer, following an initial project in 2006, reported BGR. The successful diagnoses is thanks in part to updated medical equipment.

“He had a tumor on his fibula, which is one of the two bones of the lower leg,” said Dr. Mark Levinsohn of Crouse Hospital explained. “Looking at it, it had all the characteristics of a malignant tumor and one that’s somewhat rare. So, here we have a rare circumstance and a rare tumor and that evoked our interest a lot,” he said, according to BGR.

The change in medical technology in the past 11 years, helped contribute to doctors determining Hen’s diagnosis. Levinsohn adds that the upgrade in medical tools allowed a more detailed scan of the body.

Hen was originally brought to the Cazenovia Library and Museum in New York by Robert Hubbard in 1894 from Egypt, reported Spectrum News.
