Top Republicans applauded the Trump administration’s decision not to certify the Iran nuclear agreement Friday, arguing the deal failed to protect the United States and its allies national security interests.
In a joint statement, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said the Iran deal — negotiated by the Obama administration and five other world powers — could have potentially led to Iran becoming a nuclear power.
“Our relationship with Iran should not be defined by one flawed nuclear deal. From Yemen to Lebanon, Iran is working to impose its brutal theocratic rule throughout the region,” they wrote. “It supports terrorist groups like Hezbollah, bolsters the ruthless Assad dictatorship, promotes instability through sectarianism in Iraq, and abuses the human rights of the Iranian people.”
The group said they are committed to with President Donald Trump on holding the country accountable and helping form a comprehensive Iran policy.
“We’ll take an important step to that end on the House floor by passing bills to increase sanctions unrelated to JCPOA that target Iran’s support for terrorism and its ballistic missile program when Congress returns in the coming weeks,” they continued.
The comments echo those of House Speaker Paul Ryan, commended the president for his decision to reevaluate the deal.
Trump repeatedly blasted the Iran nuclear agreement throughout the course of his campaign. He has since called on lawmakers to amend the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act.
