5 Democratic Talking Points Debunked
2. The Gun Lobby is “Buying Our Politicians”
This is a favorite of none other than Hillary Clinton, the current Democratic front runner. In her opinion, everyone who has ever touched a firearm should be held accountable for the acts of one insane psychopath who wants to ruin as many lives as possible. This is an idea that is so brain dead, not even Bernie Sanders, who has an F from the NRA, wants anything to do with it.
Clinton believes the “gun lobby” is in bed with the government and must get their money out of the hands of greedy elected representatives, give up their defense of second amendment/property rights, and allow Uncle Sam monopoly over self-defense.
To quote Hillary:
“But just think about this, since we last debated in Las Vegas nearly 3,000 people have been killed by guns, 21 mass shootings including one last weekend in Des Moines where three were murdered, 200 children have been killed. This is an emergency. There are a lot of things we’ve gotta do in our country. Reigning in Wall Street is certainly one of them. I agree with that. That’s why I’ve got such a good plan. But we have to also go after the gun lobby.”
But political ideology aside, the NRA is a joke in terms of lobbying power. They have spent all of $38 million lobbying since 1998 and have an enormous army consisting of 15 current lobbyists working for them, according to data collected by Opensecrets.org. To break this down, year by year, on average, the NRA spends approximately $2.3 million a year on lobbying, earning the “respectable” position of 15oth out of 3,500 when it comes to spending in Washington. In other words, Hillary is scared of an organization that doesn’t even make the top 100 in the field.
Now let’s compare Hillary’s political finances to that of the dreaded NRA. Once more, using data from Opensecrets.org, Hillary Clinton’s political donations dwarf the spending power of the NRA. Just her donations from the law industry are $27 million, her donations from Citigroup are upwards of $800k, and her total donations since 1999 add up to $406 million, giving her an average of $25 million in political donations for each of the 16 years. Talk about political spending power, Hillary alone has almost as much thrown at her in a year than the “gun lobby” spent in the last decade!
