Being a successful economic student comprises many features, but some of the most important are developing curiosity, understanding yourself and those around you, being open-minded and open to complex ideas, and last but not least, being determined, self-driven, and hard-working. Check out each one of these qualities separately.
- Being curious.
First and foremost, you must be curious to be a good economist. That is because, without the necessary curiosity, you won’t be able to look up new concepts and develop new ideas. You won’t really do much without being curious.
- Being math-driven.
Having a passion for mathematics is definitely something that will help you as an economist. However, that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t do it otherwise. If you like working with number, you’re just a tiny bit more fit for this position that others, but don’t take things for granted. Work hard for what you want.
- Understanding society.
Being good at numbers is not enough for you to be a good econ student; you need that knowledge of the social sciences in order to figure things out and apply what you have learned. So, you want to start looking into Psychology, Sociology, and even History for that matter.
- Understanding complexity.
The economics field is very complex so, in order to be a successful student, you must be able to understand its complexity. That means, aggregating information from all parts and merging it together into a bigger chunk of information.
- Being self-driven.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you should definitely be able to work independently as an economics student. No one can be there to watch you 24/7 and, to be honest, they shouldn’t. You should be doing your own research and drawing your own conclusions based on your own perceptions. That’s what makes you stand out, in the end.
- Managing time well.
Organizing your time accordingly shows acumen and accuracy in thinking. It also shows lack of procrastination and thus, willingness to succeed. This is an important quality to possess, especially during college, when all we want to do is lie in our beds watching Netflix and hang out with our friends. If you need a buddy to hang out with, do it and procrastinate no more.
- Admitting you don’t know.
Realizing that there are concepts you might not be familiar with and that you are always climbing the success ladder is important. You can’t possibly know everything; so understanding you don’t know opens your eyes to those exact things that you don’t know, turning you into a more complex individual. You’ll also become smarter and wiser.
- Being creative.
Creativity is part of the job, whether you like it or not. Being courageous to stand up for yourself and your opinions is part of the game. Imagining “how the world would look like” in this or that scenario is something of great importance within this field.
- Writing, reading, analyzing.
You must develop basic skills while you are in college to be able to partake in the economy in the future. So, write as much as you can, read as much as you can, and start analyzing whatever you are reading or writing. For example, you can try to write articles for study clerk company. This is good practice for when you’ll have to do this for a living. Your quantitative skills are important, remember that.
- Communication
Communication is another important part of the picture. If you are able to work behind the scenes but never come out to talk about your results, you won’t be of too much importance to the society. You need to start developing your communication and speaker skills to become truly successful.
- Being able to perform under pressure.
Economists are under a lot of pressure with having to study the market. Why? Because it is undergoing so many changes in so little time! Thus, make sure you organize well enough to handle this pressure. If you cannot do it, you will soon get too overwhelmed by this work and burn out.
- Being open to new ideas.
If you are too caught up in your own belief system, there is no way you will be able to evolve. You should be confident enough in your abilities to be able to stick to your opinions, but that doesn’t mean you should keep a close mind. Being open-minded is always a plus and will fast-forward your career in the right direction. Practice this while in college.
- Being hardworking.
Have I mentioned how hard you must work for what you want and how important it is to be very conscious of every step of the way? Oh yes, I think I might have.
- Being in love with pursuing knowledge.
This takes me back to my first point – being curious and loving to learn. If you are open to new concepts and are excited to discover new ways of thinking, you’ll become the best economist there is.
- Being able to have fun.
Don’t forget to have fun while you are at it. The Econ field can be somewhat exhausting, so laughing hard might be the only thing that could save you sometimes.
Conclusion
You will have no problem being a successful econ student if you respect all of the above. In the end, the most important thing to remember is working hard and having fun! The rest will just flow naturally. Good luck!
