Oklahoma woman Sarah Brown says a police officer needlessly butchered her family dog – a pit bull named Cali – after it jumped over her backyard fence.

A police report says the killing was justified. “It was determined that the dog had to be euthanized for the safety of the nearby park and neighborhood,” says the report, “as the dog’s owner could not be located, nor could it be captured.”

According to New Channel 4, a witness says the animal was “euthanized” with a shotgun. In a letter, the witness said the cop turned to an animal control officer and said “Did you see the way her collar flew into the air when I blew her head off? That was awesome.”

New Channel 4 anchor Ed Doney notes that pit bulls are said to be responsible for more fatal dog attacks than any other breed of dog. Yet this is a poor argument for breed-specific legislation: if all pit bulls were killed, the next most fatal breed would then be responsible for the most attacks, and so on until no dog breeds remained.
