Former Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz attempted to speak to the Florida delegation to the convention Monday after she announced she would resign early Sunday, but the crowd wouldn’t let her.
The unruly crowd held handmade signs that read, “emails,” and booed her as she attempted to rouse the crowd. Wasserman Schultz began her speech, “It is great to speak in front of people from my own state!”
The crowd chanted, screamed, and booed, forcing the chairwoman to urge the delegation to silence so she could explain her decision. The crowd would not be appeased, and the coordinator pushed Wasserman Schultz aside to pound the gavel and demand order from the room.
People in the room only began to cheer when Wasserman Schultz mentioned presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “That (interest) really shows you that Florida is the most significant battleground state that will make sure that Hillary Clinton is elected president of the United States of America. We are the state that will deliver the White House to make sure that we can continue to make the progress that we have been able to make under Barack Obama for the last eight years.”
The protesters were largely indignant supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders. Thousands of emails that illustrate Democratic leadership colluding with the Clinton campaign were released by Wikileaks.
Wasserman Schultz is up for reelection for her House seat, and faces a woefully low approval rating in the state at 19 percent, according to the only poll in the race. Clinton promised to help Schultz in her reelection bid early Monday.
