Vladimir Putin Defends Traditional Conservative Anti-Gay Values

MOSCOW, RUSSIA – President of Russia Vladimir Putin used his state-of-the-union address on Thursday to defend traditional conservative values. Putin argued in favor of a strong anti-gay stance, claiming that his opponents in the West treated “good and evil” equally.

The government of Putin has enacted harsh policies against homosexuals, passed anti-gay legislation and used brutal police methods against pro-equality protestors. The former KGB agent flung insults at the West, pledging to uphold traditional family values against, “so-called tolerance — genderless and infertile.”

“This destruction of traditional values from above not only entails negative consequences for society, but is also inherently anti-democratic because it is based on an abstract notion and runs counter to the will of the majority of people,” Putin said.

Putin also quoted Russian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev, saying that conservatism does not stop society from progressing but “prevents it from falling backward into chaotic darkness and the state of primitive man.” The statement reportedly received great applause from the audience.

Putin is believed to be a devout Orthodox Christian.
