In the wake of his recent State of the Union address, President Obama has brazenly promised to flout Congress and use executive power to implement his policy goals. A new official White House video, for instance, boasts that “President Obama is not waiting for Congress and is taking steps to use his executive authority to expand opportunity and level the playing field for middle-class Americans.”

Video from 2008, however, shows Obama clearly promising to do precisely the opposite. “The biggest problems we’re facing right now have to do with George Bush trying to bring more and more power into the executive branch and not go through Congress at all,” Obama told a town hall meeting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “And that’s what I intend to reverse when I’m president of the United States of America.”
