American University (AU) granted black students an extension on their final exams and a “sanctuary” space during protests on Friday.

Provost Scott Bass of AU agreed to the demands of around 50 protesters to hold a meeting Monday with black student leaders, according to Campus Reform. The protesters issued the demands following the sighting of bananas hanging from trees last week.

“For the remaining [sic] of the semester, the Bridge will become a sanctuary for people of color,” read the first demand to which the provost consented, reports Campus Reform. The Bridge is a student lounge and cafe at AU.

“All POC [people of color] students get extensions, and should not be penalized for already scheduled finals after the incident,” said the second demand, referring to the hanging of bananas from trees.

A third demand insists upon the creation of an investigative team to study incidents of perceived racism or discrimination.

During their demonstration, the protesters instigated a traffic jam, impeding cars from accessing a parking garage on campus.

“There’s nothing more important, in terms of my administration, than being a multicultural campus,” said Bass, who also notified the protesters that AU had arranged a deal with Ibram X. Kendi, who wrote “Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America,” to establish an anti-racism center at the school.

“At the student protest Friday, officials met with a student group. They discussed concerns related to the racially motivated hate crime on AU’s campus and these discussions will be ongoing,” AU’s media outreach told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an email. “Provost Scott A. Bass met with the students assembled. He had previously set a meeting for today and agreed to continue the conversation. On Friday he was able to address their immediate concerns.”
