University Apologizing for Sexy Sorority Video Is Absolutely Bulls**t! Here’s Why…

Telling Women How to Present Themselves is Not Feminism, You’re a Hypocrite

By Sarah Gompper

On August 14th A.L. Bailey published an opinion piece for AL.com that went after a viral University of Alabama Alpha Phi sorority recruitment video, calling it “worse for women than Donald Trump.” In response to significant public outlash, the sorority removed the video; however, copies have been posted and can still be seen across the internet.

Deborah Lane, Associate Vice President for University Relations, reportedly released an apologetic response to the video on August 17th:

This video is not reflective of UA’s expectations for student organizations to be responsible digital citizens. It is important for student organizations to remember what is posted on social media makes a difference, today and tomorrow, on how they are viewed and perceived

This statement couldn’t be more misguided.

In an attempt to placate the masses, the University of Alabama took a misogynistic stance against the celebration of femininity, as opposed to standing up for its students.

The video depicted the women of Alpha Phi dancing, walking hand-in-hand, playing in a lake, and doing flips on the football field. “It’s a parade of white girls and blonde hair dye, coordinated clothing, bikinis and daisy dukes,” Bailey’s piece read, “euphoric hand-holding and hugging.”

Yes, the video is stereotypical of sorority life. There are parts that might make many Americans roll their eyes. But that is not who the video is trying to appeal to.

While Bailey maliciously suggests that they were trying to appeal to college men and “creepers” on YouTube, in reality they are only trying to show what is special about their organization, and grab the interest of freshmen women who are seeking a close female community at Alabama.

This was not a forced march. There was no male director manipulating or objectifying the women; on the contrary, the women of Alpha Phi were proudly presenting themselves the way they see themselves, and the way they want to be seen.

Is it really the end of the world if these women are “viewed and perceived” as white girls with bleached blonde hair? That’s who they are, and they created the video to celebrate their femininity and the close friendships they developed through their sorority. Does the public want these women to apologize for their lifestyle?

Bailey snidely reviewed the video as “gorgeous party-girl” and “cookie-cutter.” The only problem with those adjectives is the judgment attached to them. The women in the video could just as easily be described positively as “spirited sorority sisters,” “fun-loving” or “all American.”

“It’s all so racially and aesthetically homogeneous and forced, so hyper-feminine,” Bailey wrote, “making it so terribly difficult for anyone to take them seriously, now or in the future.”

“Yes, sororities are known for being pretty and flirty; they aren’t bastions of feminist ideologies. But perhaps they shouldn’t completely sabotage them either.”

Maybe the problem is not with how the women are presenting themselves, but rather with our culture which devalues femininity.

Granted, the feminist movement is widely varying, but the same women who have marched in the streets and fought to end “slut shaming” are now attacking the women of Alpha Phi for being “bimbos” and suggesting their feminine behavior holds back women as a class.

That is pure hypocrisy.

Sorority girls holding hands and wearing bikinis hold back all women, but frat boys who pee on their pledges can be taken seriously in the workplace?

The only women “sabotaging” feminism are those who refuse to take other women seriously because of the way they dress, how beautiful they are, or their “hyper-femininity.”

This was the type of mean, catty opinion piece that sounded like it was written by a member of a competing sorority. For Alabama to apologize suggests that the school is ashamed of its students and thinks less of “hyper-feminine” members of the community.

Tweet @UofAlabama to tell them what you think of their apologetic response.
