President Barack Obama appeared in an address to the nation today to concede that the government of the United States will likely shut down due to failure to reach an agreement on a bill to fund the government. There is still a small chance that the government could be funded if the GOP cuts the provision to defund Obamacare. But, the president has stated he would vote for a ‘clean CR’ without the wording to delay Obamacare if the House GOP manages to get it to his desk today. Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) stated clearly today that it was not going to happen.

The president stated, “Of all the responsibilities the constitution endows to congress. Two should be very simple. Pass a budget and pay its bills.”

The president described what a shutdown would mean. Social Security and Medicare would still be distributed, mail will still be delivered and national security and public safety operations will continue. The military will still go to work as well as air traffic control and prison guards will still be working, even though their paychecks will be delayed. NASA will shut down except for mission control to support the astronauts in orbit. Office buildings will be closed. Some vital services will be hamstrung. Business owners would see delays in raising capital or getting permits. Veterans will find their support centers unstaffed. Tourists will find their museums and monuments immediately closed.

The president claimed that Republicans are blocking the funding for Obamacare to deny women funding for medical care. He chastised the GOP exclaiming how his law will go into effect tomorrow no matter what.

“The U.S. Government is the words largest employer” the president stated. Budget negotiations failed when the president refused to agree to a deal that would have delayed the funding of Obamacare for another year. A bill to fund the military in the short-term was passed and certain government workers will not be furloughed.
