Following the violent confrontation  in Washington DC, between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan‘s security force and anti-Erdogan protesters, the Turkish government has summoned the United States ambassador calling the incident “aggressive and unprofessional actions” by American security personnel against Turkish bodyguards, reports the Associated Press (AP).

The summons of the US Ambassador appear to be a retaliation to calls inside the US for a strong response against the Turkish security officers who were seen hitting and kicking protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence in DC during Erdogan’s visit to the White House last week.

According to the AP, two bodyguards were initially detained during the incident, but were quickly released.

A Turkish Foreign Ministry statement said US Ambassador John Bass was given a “written and verbal protest” over the treatment of two security officers that it said were “contrary to diplomatic rules and practices,” the AP reports.

The Turkish government has also formally requested “a full investigation of this diplomatic incident,” said the AP.

The Guardian reported that state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert stated that “We are [The US] communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.”

The Republican Senator from Arizona, John McCain, told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that “We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America.”

According to the Guardian, the Senator also called for more diplomatic response from the US, and said the government should press charges against Turkish officials involved in the brawl.

“These are not just average people that did this beating. This is Erdoğan’s security detail,” said McCain. “Somebody told them to go and beat up on these peaceful demonstrators, and I think it should have repercussions, including identifying these people and bringing charges against them.

“After all, they violated American laws in the United States of America, so you cannot have that happen in the United States of America. People have the right in our country to peacefully demonstrate and they were peacefully demonstrating.”
