Donald Trump Targets Pope Francis in Latest Political Rant

by Micah J. Fleck

Donald Trump was on Fox Business recently and complained about a planned appearance by Pope Francis in Mexico, equating it to implied political or crony allegiances for Mexico and against America. Trump argued that America can only be strong if a wall is built along the country lines with Mexico and the Pope’s show of support for the latter nation was due to the Pope being “political” and not understanding “the problems this country has.”

The condescending rhetoric Trump is currently hurling toward the Pope wasn’t consistent with his attitude toward Francis leading into the presidential race, however, as CNN point out in the included video. In that report, GOP advisor Chip Felkel of The Felkel Group accused Trump of “pandering” and insincere tactics to win over the Evangelical base that seems to be starting to sway in favor of Ted Cruz.

Most startling among Trump’s remarks, however, was the insinuation that perhaps there was financial motivation behind the appearance:

“I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants the border just the way it is because they are making a fortune, and we’re losing.”
